Since 2015, KLW has manufactured and delivered more than fifty EPA Certified and CARB Verified Tier 4 locomotives across the U.S.  Our customers include government entities, short line railroads and industrial customers, all with the same goals: emit less, consume less, and do more.  How does KLW meet those demands?

Innovation

Rail is already the most sustainable way to transport products over land for long distances. According to The Association of American Railroads, Railroads move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles per gallon of fuel and account for just 0.5% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and just 1.7% of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions.
 
KLW's goal is to further reduce emissions by aligning our goals with those of the California Air Resources Board and other leaders in our industry.  Our patented systems combined with engines from our partners, Cummins and MTU, utilize SCR after-treatment systems to provide scalable emissions reduction without additional degradation of the locomotive’s engine seen in EGR solutions.

KLW partners with Cummins and MTU to provide the highest quality engines for low, medium, and high horsepower applications.  We also partner with CAF, TSA and TMV to provide world class AC Traction systems.

Continually Moving Forward

What does the sustainable locomotive look like?  The KLW 4400-ACT 4 is powered by a Cummins QSK95 engine which provides 950V DC to the electrical bus and incorporates KLW’s locomotive system integration.  Our locomotive design allows for the utilization of any power source to generate the required voltage as emissions reductions solutions evolve, low-carbon power technology matures, direction clarifies, infrastructures develop for new fuels, and new fuel costs align with operating ratio targets.

This System Allows For Emissions Reduction

Tier 4:
  • Selective Catalytic reduction (SCR) vs. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)—Lower heat rejection, more compact cooling package and efficient fan operation; less degradation of and maintenance required on EGR systems.
  • Battery APU- Reduced parasitic loads on engine system, through captured energy, offsetting reduced horsepower from electrical draw of auxiliary systems.
  • Efficient Oil-Free Air Compressor from our partner, New York Air Brake.
